2020 albums worth talking about
Fontaines D.C. - A Hero's Death
Top Track(s) - A Lucid Dream // Living In America
Overall Rating - 9/10
Let's start off on an absolute high with the newest release from, in my opinion, the most exciting band around right now: Fonataines D.C.! After their debut album, Dogrel, was released last year, I expected big things from any future releases and they certainly did not disappoint. A much more sophisticated sounding record from them this time, with some tracks (particularly Love Is the Main Thing) giving off huge Joy Division sounds. It's always a worry when a band produce such a great debut, that their second record can not live up to the first, however A Hero's Death absolutely smashes it out of the park. It's really hard to fault this album at all, although I must say I prefer their heavier, more energetic tracks to the slower ones - of course that is just personal taste and either way this album sits at the top of my list of 2020 album favourites without a doubt.
Lady Gaga - Chromatica
Top Track(s) - Alice
Overall Rating - 8/10
In stark contrast to the the last album featured, we have the latest release from Lady Gaga (that's right, we love all genres here!) Being released halfway through the first UK lockdown, this album managed to single-handedly help me through the days of being confined to the house. The only regret I have about this, is that we weren't all able to party over the summer and sing Rain On Me (feat. Ariana Grande) at the top of our voices in the sunshine. Sometimes with Lady Gaga I've found that her albums need to be listen to a few times to get into them, yet I was hooked immediately from the first listen of Chromatica. Other than maybe a couple of songs I could take or leave, I would say this album is a masterpiece.
Deftones - Ohms
Top Track(s) - Genesis // The Link Is Dead
Overall Rating - 8/10
Finally, after a 4 year hiatus - Deftones are back! For many years, Deftones were one of my favourite bands and just as I was starting to forgot how much I loved them, they hit me with their latest release, Ohms. The album starts off on such a high, with Genesis, with such a true-to-their-roots Deftones sound. What's great about Deftones is that every album is so different to the previous, yet they are always so recognisable in their sound, and consistent with their tracks. There's so much head-banging action provided by this record, that it tells me Deftones have no intention of slowing down just yet, and I am very happy about that! I'd go as far as to say I don't mind waiting 4 years for another album, as long as they keep up to the standard of Ohms.
The Wytches - Three Mile Ditch
Top Track(s) - Three Mile Ditch // Fly Inside
Overall Rating - 7.5/10
Another band we have had to wait patiently for 4 years for, are the Wytches. I'm always excited to see what they come out with, because of their chaotically experimental sound, that somehow just manages to work in such a beautiful way. Initially, when I played this album for the first time, I was blown away by the first half of the record, and found the last half slightly lacklustre in it's slower pace. I'm willing to admit that I was wrong with my first impression, and after listening a few more times I've really grown to love the album as a whole. Because of this, I imagine my love for the album to just grow and grow the more I listen to it, and I'm really hoping that we can get back to live music shows again; the Wytches always put on an amazing live show and I would absolutely love to see some of these tracks played live for sure.
Baxter Dury - The Night Chancers
Top Track(s) - Slumlord // Saliva Hog
Overall Rating - 7/10
There's nothing quite like settling down, relaxing and being soothed by the deeply hypnotising voice of Baxter Dury - and The Night Chancers is the absolute perfect soundtrack for doing just that. Although there's nothing groundbreaking really being done in this record, the music composition, sharp lyrics and French vocals all together somehow blend to create a very gritty-yet-sophisticated sound. The perfect sountrack for settling down after a hard day at work, with a nice glass of wine in your hand.
DMA's - The Glow
Top Track(s) - Strangers
Overall Rating - 6/10
Although I just don't find DMA's to my liking, my boyfriend absolutely loves them and I don't think he would be happy with me if I didn't give The Glow a mention in this post... I tried to be objective with my overall rating of this album, because really there isn't anything terrible about it, it just doesn't get me excited or wanting to listen to it more. What I do like about the album is that it's easy-listening, good to sing along to whilst driving, as the lyrics are fairly easy to learn and enjoy. I can't imagine DMA's ever becoming my favourite band, but at least I don't feel like skipping the song when my boyfriend wants to play them in the car, so that's a positive at least!
